Next Dubtable Appearances

Ok everyone - I've got two showings of the Dubtable coming up. Firstly this weekend is the McArtney single launch night, Saturday the 20th of Feb, at Raval (just above the Macquarie Hotel, in Surry Hills). Then next weekend is Corinbank Music and Arts Festival, in Canberra, on the 26th to 28th of Feb. See you all around!

Sunday Arts on ABC

Apparently me and the dubtable appeared for about 3 seconds on Sunday Arts on the ABC, on the 15th of November. Did anyone catch it? If not, you can download it at http://www.abc.net.au/tv/geo/sundayarts/

It's in a short part of the program about artist run spaces in Marrickville and surrounds. Some of our favourites are included, including a short profile about the one legalised beacon of the emerging arts, The Red Rattler. The Rattler and the Dubtable show up at about 2 minutes into the show.

Thanks to everyone that came and checked out the dubtable presentation at this year's TINA. I hope it was fun. Sadly I didn't get the full new dubtable with all new tracks out, but at least I had the new box! Down below are some photos from the on-going construction and recording going in to the new beast.

Review, a new camera, and a new dubtable on the way

I stumbled upon a short review of the Dubtable at the High n' Dry Fundraiser, in amongst all the other great things that happened at that gig. There are photos too:

"Wandering between rooms, we were intrigued by James Nichols & The Dub Table Tactile Experiment. This amazing feat of engineering and imagination lets the operator control prerecorded Dub loops by placing, sliding and rotating handheld controllers across the table surface. With people swarming the table it was hard to get a good grasp on the ingenious contraption, however, even more fascinating was watching the captivation and amazement on other people’s faces as they interacted with the device and created their own music. If you are ever lucky enough to be in the same place at the same time as this table of dubly goodness I strongly suggest you have a fiddle."

In other news I've bought a new industrial assembly line camera (60 fps!) for making the new Dubtable Ver 2.0. There'll be new tracks and a new interface, hopefully in time for the appearance and talk at this year's This Is Not Art festival

Next Outing

Will be at Ripped. This won't be any ordinary dubtable, it will be an all new MashTable, will involve some squelch, and possibly involve some gabba. It's at The Red Rattler Theatre, Marrickville NSW, on the 8th of May.

I've neglected to, up til now, credit the people and musicians that have helped me with this project! It's about time. Without further ado:

Corinbank was a wicked festival down near Canberra, many thanks to the crew for letting me have my own Dubtable sideshow tent! There's also some great footage from Corinbank that I've uploaded. Many many thanks to Lousie Bradley for sending me her footage.

This footage realy shows the way I originally envisaged using the dubtable - using it to create a song progression by adding and removing layers, and dubbing it the hell out.

Welcome to the dubtable blog. This page is essentially a collection of photos, clips, and recordings of the dubtable. Sometime down the track I'll have some explanations of how things work in my words, but for now check out the info on the far far superior version that started it all.
